RAIN POSTPONES STORMPAY.COM DLMS COLUMBUS SPEEDWAY WINTER CLASSIC UNTIL SUNDAY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

COLUMBUS, MS – Persistent rain on Saturday forced postponement of the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series Winter Classic event at Columbus Speedway until 12 noon on Sunday. The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series will pick up the program with one lap completed in the third 10-lap Qualifying Race, followed by the 40-lap $2,500-to-win main event.

The rain began to fall at 3:30 p.m. with one lap completed in the third Qualifying Race. Columbus Speedway officials decided to wait out the rain in an attempt to complete the event on Saturday night. The rain quit at 8 p.m., and track officials began the process of rolling the track back in.

Progress was being made, but the rain returned at 9:30p.m., and officials threw in the towel until Sunday.

Before the rains came, time trials for the 49 entrants locked the top 10 qualifiers into the main event, and two of the three Qualifying Races put ten more drivers into the main event field of 24. Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN was the fast qualifier with a lap around the 1/4-mile clay oval in 14.770 seconds in the S&S Millwright Barry Wright.

Joining Buckingham among the top ten transfer drivers were Scott Cook of Shelbyville, TN, Jay Blair of Angie, LA, Frank Ingram of Woodstock, GA, Stephen Brantley of Monroeville, AL, Derrick Rainey of Powder Springs, GA, Curtis Cline of Douglasville, GA, Rusty Hoge of Ooltewah, TN, Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA, and Carnell Parker III of Clarksville, TN.

The top four drivers transferring out of the first Qualifying Race were Brian Rickman of Columbus, MS, Logan Yates of Delta, AL, Robert Stutts of Murfreesboro, TN, and Brad Banes of Brenton, AL.

The defending StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Champion David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN won the second Qualifying Race, and was joined transferring into the big show by Nextel Cup star Ken Schrader of Fenton, MO, Neil Lee of Flowood, MS, and Chris Tays of Corinth, MS. Michael Keener of Temple, GA finished fifth, and took a provisional as the 23rd starter.

When the third qualifying race takes the green flag on Sunday, the StormPay.com DLMS National point leader Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA will lead the pack followed by Jim Till of Greenville, AL, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA, and Stacy Tyler of Moulton, AL in the first four spots.

If Turner finishes in the top four spots, that will put Chris Hoomes of Brenton, AL, the fifth-place finisher in the first Qualifying Race, in the show in the 24th starting spot. If Turner finishes fifth or worse, that would move him into the 23rd starting spot as a provisional, and Keener would start 24th.
