CARTERSVILLE, GA – The NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series
National Tour will make its third try to run the $2,000-to-win Stars and
Stripes 40 at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL this Friday night, and the
$2,500-to-win Salute To The Armed Forces 50 at East Alabama Motor Speedway
in Phenix City, AL this Saturday night. An all-star line-up of NeSmith Chevrolet
Dirt Late Model Series drivers from past and present were in the Penton
Raceway pit area on May 28 for the beginning of a Memorial Day Weekend
racing extravaganza, only to have it rained out, not once, but twice.
The NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS competitors, fans, and officials are
hoping the third time will be a charm. Not only were the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet
DLMS National Championship contenders on hand on May 28, but they were
joined by several drivers who have made series history through the years. The 2010 line-up of drivers, including
the defending NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Champion Eric Cooley of
Fulton, MS, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA, Justin McRee of Cuba, AL,
Charlie Henderson of Cottondale, AL, Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS, Chris
McElhenney of Lake, MS, Marcus Minga of Shannon, MS, Larry Harrod of
Plains, GA, Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS, Jay Burchfield of Columbus, MS,
and Frank Wilson of Harold, FL were getting ready to race. Many of these drivers have raced with the
series prior to this season, and they were spending some time with drivers
they have raced against in season’s past. Chip Brindle of That somebody in 2008 and 2009 was Larry
Boutwell of Baker, FL. Boutwell
has cut back his racing program for 2010, but he was entered for the
holiday weekend’s races. Derrick
Rainey of Powder Springs, GA also cut back his racing efforts for 2010 to
help launch his young son’s racing career in Quarter Midgets.
Rainey, with five series career wins and seven career poles, was
ready to race on May 28. Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL, who was the
series Rookie of the Year in 2008, and the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly
Racing Series East Region Champion was ready to defending his dominance of
the two tracks, Knowles swept
the Penton/East Alabama Motor Speedway weekend in 2009. Another driver that had his broom out was
William Thomas of Add to that mix the top local favorites
at Penton Raceway and East Alabama Motor Speedway like NeSmith Chevrolet
Weekly Racing Series East Region title contenders Chase Edge of Lafayette,
AL, Richie Stephens of Phenix City, AL, Craig Scott of Newnan, GA, Tod
Darda of LaGrange, GA, Parrish Duncan of Newnan, GA, Ryan King of
Anniston, AL, Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, AL, and Dana Eiland of
Salem, AL. With all of that talent, you have the
ingredients for what is shaping up to be a memorable racing weekend this
Friday night at Penton Raceway and this Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway fans will get
an opportunity to be a part of the high-speed action, as the NeSmith
Chevrolet DLMS “Ride For Life” two-seat dirt late model will be at
EAMS this Saturday night. Race
fans will able to bid for a six-lap ride at race speed with their favorite
driver with the proceeds benefiting the local chapter of the American
Cancer Society. Driver donating their time and talent to
give six lucky fans the “Ride For Life” to benefit the American Cancer
Society are William Thomas, Chase Edge, Richie Stephens, Larry Harrod,
Dana Eiland and Terrance Nowell. The Quality Inn in Opelika, AL at Exit 62
on I-85 will be the NeSmith Racing Official Host Hotel for the events this
Friday night at Penton Raceway and this Saturday night at East Alabama
Motor Speedway. The Quality
